Environmental sustainability within renovation and urban renewal

The aim of the project has been to single out energy solutions that have a significant energy and environmental influence as well as an acceptable economy in connection with renovation and urban renewal. The aim was furthermore that the solution should have a minimum of maintenance and create a healthy indoor climate.

Project description

There is a need to focus more directly on the possibilities of optimising energy within renovation and urban renewal. The completed research- and development projects with elements of energy saving have often been isolated initiatives and the Urban and Renewal Company estimates that there is a need for a pre-analysis in order to prioritise and co-ordinate the work. The purpose of the project is to point out energy solutions which - in connection with renovation and urban renewal - have a significant energy and environmental effect as well as a reasonable economy, are easy to maintain and are able to create a good inside climate for the inhabitants. In order to obtain the largest synergy effect the solutions are evaluated in connection with each other. Furthermore it is a whish to evaluate the energy solutions that - with research and development as a goal - can give a significant reduction of the energy use and environmental burden in the renovated apartment blocks. The solution possibilities are described in a catalogue which gives a basis for the design of a projecting manual. On the geographical level the heat planning tool EPROJ will be upgrated in order to be able to accurately calculate small areas in relation to environmental sustainability within building renovation. In the project a thorough analyses of the energy- and environmental effect of renovation and urban renewal within the last years will be conducted. The results of the project will be the basis of a broad and specific implementation of energy saving arrangements in the public supported renovation and urban renewal projects. In the following phase the Urban Renewal Company carried out a renovation of an apartment block to demonstrate the most efficient energy solutions. In longer run the aim is to carry out an energy 'lift' (improvement) of an area where different solurces of energy optimising will be demonstrated in connection with urban renewal of older apartment blocks in a larger urban area

Results

In order to obtain the largest synergy effect the solutions has been evaluated in coherence. The emphasis has been on four types of analyses and calculations: Statistic analyzes, detail analyzes, analyzes of the parameters influence on the total result and calculated estimations. The analyses and calculations indicate the energy savings, which are obtained through the renewal of today and the beneficiary of the solutions when used in contemporary renewal of tomorrow. These solutions have been used to calculate the possible energy savings of the whole City of Copenhagen. The project has shown that it is possible to save energy in connection with urban renewal. More attention has to be paid to the following three building parts: Windows, ventilation and insulation of walls. Many alternative solutions for these building parts are available today, and if applied in the urban renewal, the energy saving can reach an acceptable level. Thus there is a need to develop new solutions within the area of insulation of walls. Suggestions to energy saving initiatives are shown in the appendix
