Superconductors in the Danish Power sector 2000

The design with world record low loss of 0.6 W/m at 2 kArms was transfered to a 30 m long cable. These conductors are bendable, and the manufacturing capacity in the experimental plant was extended to continuous 100-200 m lengths.

Project description

The goal of this project is to enable the use of high-temperature superconductors (HTS) in the danish power grid, and to evaluate the commercial benefits and energy savings. A demonstration of a 30 m three-phase cable system in the Danish utility grid will be based on the experiences from continuously produced high-power cable from 1999 and a 10 m long AC cable system built in 1998. There is focus on cable accessories such as the terminations and the cooling machine. Also, studies are carried out regarding the electrical and thermal losses at the high currents that are required to make superconducting cables commercially interesting for medium-level power transmission (

Results

Compact and realistic terminations have been developped, that can be installed in conventional switch-yards and power stations. A complete 30 m cable with conductor, thermal insulation, dielectricum and screen was developed and manufactured in an industrial production environment. In the optimisation of single filament drawing with respect to die angle, degree of reduction, number of intermediate annealing steps, the total number of drawing steps has been reduced. An improved configuration of multi filament tapes has been developed. A unique technique was developed for studies of texture and phase transformations in BSCCO/Ag tapes by x-ray diffraction based on high-energy photons from a synchrotron. e preparation of a 30 m full-scale demonstration project in a realistic environment has been completed
