Improvement of electric energy efficiency of biomass fired boilers - supplier specific part

The objective of this research project is to improve the electric energy efficiency of biomass fired boilers (specifically straw). The main focus of the project is on deposit formation on walls and superheater surfaces, and their impact on local and overall heat transfer, as well as on boiler operation.

Project description

Deposit formation in straw fired units constitutes a significant problem with respect to efficiency, plant availability and corrosion. This project will utilize existing and concurrently produced information on deposit formation in straw fired boilers to implement a numerical model of deposit formation for supplier specific superheater geometries. The deposition model will be used in full boiler simulations, including deposit formation and the impact this has on heat transfer. Prediction of deposit formation as a function of ash composition, superheater geometry and operating conditions, will be used to optimize plant layout with the purpose of minimizing the influence of deposits on efficiency, operational stability, plant availability and corrosion. The results of the project will be implemented in the design procedure for straw fired plants supplied by the industrial participant in the project
