Analysis of choice of vehicle type

The project aims to achieve a better understanding of vehicle type choice through the building of a disaggregate model of vehicle type choice.

Project description

The project's aim is to analyse the potential for improved energy efficiency of the passenger car fleet through the effects of taxation on car-type choice. The analysis is based on a stated preference survey of buyers of new cars and large data set containing information on all new vehicle purchases in Denmark during one year. The data are combined in a model which predicts the composition of new car sales involving ca. 100 car types. The model includes quality parameters for the vehicle types as well as prices, including taxation and socio-economic values. The model is employed to assess the consequences of various policy measures and to gain evidence of the mechanisms determining the car type choice

Results

The model is based on a data set unique for Denmark comprising all new vehicle sales in Denmark. The make, model and version is known for each car sold and each car is linked to official databases with household information including age, sex, income, employment status, residence, etc., for all household members. This data set is supplemented by a stated preference analysis. The household decision of which vehicle to buy is viewed as being dependent on household socio-economic characteristics, vehicle characeristics, vehicle prices, including registration charges, annual taxes and insurance, fuel prices including fuel levies. This determines the composition of new car sales on types when all households are taken together. This is used to calculate average emission rate for the new car fleet as well as revenues from the taxes mentioned above
