Evaluation of potential reservoir units within a marine basinal fan system in the Gertrud Graben

The Jurassic succession in the Gertrud Graben has been studies using multi-channel seismic data and well data. The study provides a detailed interpretation of seismic lines and use of seismic inversions techniques in order to predict the lithology.

Results

The results of the seismic study are integrated with the sedimentological studies of the Jeppe-1, Gwen-2, and Mona-1 wells. The results of the study conclude that it is most likely that sand-rich gravity and turbiditic sediments were deposited within the central part of the Gertrud Graben. These sand-rich deposits interbedded in the uppermost part of the Farsund Formation and of Late Volgian-Early Ryazanian in age, constitute a subtle trap for hydrocarbon accumulation. The sandstones is buried to a depth of approximaldy 4 km which is also known from the nearby Gert Field, and indicate that they may have reservoir properties. The sandstones are partly interbedded in the organic-rich Hot Unit, which is at the peak oil generation at these depths and thus makes this concept interesting. Furthermore, at a deeper level within the Farsund Formation in the Jeppe-1 and Gwen-2 wells, a thin sandstone has been mapped. This sandstone seems to thickens towards the major fault bounding the Gertrud Graben towards the east. The sandstones is, however, local of extent and probably buried too deep to be of interest for hydrocarbon exploration. The source area for the coarse-grained sediments deposited within the Gertrud Graben was the Mandal High and elevated area east of the Mandal High
