Clean and efficient biomass utilization for production of power and heat. Phase 3 in a long-term strategic research program

Institut for Kemiteknik

The project has two aims: 1) to investigate and clearify the rheology of ashes and deposits formed in full-scale biomass-fired utility boilers, and 2) investigation of selective catalytic reductions of NO with NH3.

Project description

Combustion of biomass may lead to formation running (liquid) slags in boilers due to the high content of potassium in most biomasses. The project will generate new viscosity data for biomass ashed as well as an improved modeling of biomass ash viscosities as a function af temperature and composition. Real deposits/ashes as well as syntetic mixtures will be applied. Biomass combustion may lead to a quick deactivation of SCR catalysts applied for reduction of NO with NH3. The project will outline the reasons for the deactivation and allow an improved evaluation of the use of SCR on biomass fired boilers
