GREENSHIP – green liner shipping
In the project proposal it is noted that the objective of the project is to demonstrate that decision support tools based on mathematical cargo mix optimization can be used by Maersk Line’s uptake management and stowage planning teams to reduce the CO2 emission for transporting one twenty-foot container one kilometre by at least 5%.
The reduction in CO2 emissions are achieved by applying a mathematical support tool that allows the containers to be stacked more efficiently in the container ship, considering the type of container, the cargo of the container, the port of departure and the port of arrival. All this to allow the same container ship to carry more containers and thereby saving fuel for each container transported.
As of now, stowage of the containers is done manually by stowage specialists, and the project mention that the success criterion for the project is that a 99% accuracy is found between the solutions generated by the optimization models and the solutions found manually by the stowage specialists. Also it is mentioned that the computation time should not exceed 10 minutes to find the optimal configuration of the containers.
