Natural Gas Pathways

Transport og Elektriske systemer

The purpose of is to contribute to an international projects on natural gas for road transport lead by The United States of America. The project maps several alternative pathways from raw natural gas to road going engine fuels. This incorporates technologies such as liquefied natural gas, methanol, synthetic diesel and emerging engine technologies.

The aim of the project was to ensure Danish participation in a US project on natural gas for road transport. The project examined a number of alternative value chains from the extraction of raw natural gas for use as fuel in engines. This included a wide range of technologies such as liquid natural gas, methanol, synthetic diesel and a range of new engine technologies.
Project description

In this project a value proposition study will be conducted to investigate different pathways of natural gas used in on-road vehicles to assess the advantages and disadvantages of the various options. Aspects include but are not limited to cost, lifecycle emissions, energy consumption, and social benefits. The goal is to identify a “winning” way to utilize natural gas in transportation with the potential to emerge into the mainstream market, instead of maintaining a niche market in many countries.

Results
In this project there was made a total value chain study of the different routes from natural gas for use as a fuel in cars, in order to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of the various options. Aspects that were evaluated included the the total cost, source-to-wheel emissions, energy consumption and social benefits.
