IEA ECES Annex: Carnot batteries - Technology and Perspectives
The goals of IEA-ECES annex 36 include:
- creating a platform for the knowledge exchange between experts from both industry and academia.
- mapping of the main Carnot Batteries technologies and applications.
- identifying technology application in the market and identifying the services that should/can be provided by Carnot Batteries.
- inform policy and provide a basis for proper regulations. The focus of the upcoming IEA-ECES (Energy Conservation Through Energy Storages) Annex 36 will be on the Carnot Battery technology, which can be considered an electrical energy storage (EES) technology.
The Carnot Battery technology is very relevant for the future energy system in Denmark, due to geographical conditions, which do not favor pumped-hydro and compressed air energy storage.
Through this international project, Denmark could maintain its leading position in the field of smart energy solutions, find new ways to integrate a high share of fluctuating electricity in the energy system, enforce its position within and knowledge about energy storage, and have an insight on how the foreign energy systems are expected to develop in the short- and long-term. In this way, Denmark would have the possibility to further improve its own energy system while generating opportunities to export system solutions and components to other countries.
The Danish contributions to the upcoming IEA ECES Annex mainly consist of assessment of components and technology for possible application in Carnot batteries and energy system analysis of different Carnot battery concepts on local system scale and on a national energy system scale to assess the potentials and perspectives of future implementation of Carnot batteries.
