Energy and emission efficient straw boiler
The aim of the project is to develop an energy-efficient biomass boiler for straw combustion. The boiler must have a high efficiency and low NOx emissions. The goal is to reduce NOx emissions without at the same time increase the CO emissions. The focus will be on smaller straw boilers with a capacity of 100-200 kW.
The objective is to develop and document a new boiler for straw combustion. The boiler must be energy efficient and the formation of NOx low.
The project is divided into phases. In phase one, a REKA automatically 200 kW boiler is used as basic unit. The combustion chamber of the boiler will be changed in a way that a two-stage combustion can be obtained, as the formation of NO may be reduced when two-stage combustion is used. A system for control and regulation of primary and secondary combustion air as well as recycling of the flue gas into the primary combustion zone will be established. If good results is achieved, the concept will be further developed.
In the phase two, a new experimental boiler will be constructed based on the results obtained in phase one, literature studies and other existing knowledge. The research and experiments will focus on optimizing of the boiler design and components of the plant. A new automatic control system will be developed and optimized. The control system must be able to optimize the combustion by regulation of fuel intake, supply of primary and secondary combustion air. Finally, the plant will be documented by a long-term test.
