KOHESYS - Køge Nord thermal energy system (pre-study)

The project KOHESYS (pre-study) aims to assess the technical and economic feasibility of a novel thermal energy system serving the new urban area of Køge Nord. The novelty of the system is its ability to provide simultaneous heating and cooling to buildings using the same piping network with water near ground temperature. Such systems, which are often being referred to as the “5^th generation district heating and cooling systems” (5GDHC), can significantly contribute to the decarbonization of cities and communities as they enable high integration of renewable energy sources such as low-grade urban waste heat.

This pre-study project will:

• Determine the design criteria of 5GDHC systems according to Danish legislation, urban contexts, and climate conditions.
• Provide an early design of the 5GDHC system for the urban area of Køge Nord.
• Perform energy simulations to calculate the primary energy use and CO₂ emissions of the 5GDHC system in comparison to conventional district heating solutions.
• Assess the cost-effectiveness of the system and investigate new business models for the tradability of excess heat.

The completion of this pre-study will represent the starting point for the next development and demonstration phase.
