IEA Wind Task 37 - Wind Energy Systems Engineering / Integrated RD&D

The prupose of the present project is to support the Danish participation in and leadership of Task 37, and to coordinate this international effort with the national activities that relate to it. Additionally, the project will ensure that the results of the collaboration are coordinated with and disseminated to the Danish reasearch community and industry through a series of workshops.

Project description

In Phase II, Task 37 consists of four main work packages: WP1: Guidelines on a common framework for
wind energy systems; WP2: Reference wind energy systems; and WP3: Best practice Multidisciplinary
design analysis and optimization (MDAO case studies at different system levels (turbines and plants), and
WP4: Workshops on the state-of-the-art in MDAO (in specific application areas).

DTU Wind Energy intends to participate in all four work packages and in the following the more specific activities will be outlined:
Rooted in the on-going activities to develop the free open source systems engineering framework, FUSEDWind,
DTU Wind Energy will participate in WP1 to continue to develop a common framework for the IEA collaboration on benchmarking SE tools. Research in wind energy has for decades relied on openly available reference wind turbines, but also more
recently wind power plants. In WP2, DTU will support the controller development of a new floating 15 MW
offshore wind turbine. Likewise, DTU will contribute to the development of the IEA Wind reference wind
power plant associated with the floating reference wind turbine. The goal of WP3 is to provide a systematic overview and evaluation of different modeling and optimization approaches to MDAO of wind turbines and plants. DTU will participate in WP3 towards formulation of benchmark SE problems for both wind turbines and plants, and subsequently use this collaboration to validate its models. For WP4, the goal is to address advanced MDAO applications through a series of workshops, where DTU will participate, and sometimes lead, workshops on advanced wind turbine and plant MDAO research.
