Danish participation in IEA Annex 83 – Positive Energy Districts

Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) are groups of buildings that produce more energy than they use. The purpose of the project is to develop information/guidance on how to plan and implement PEDs, including technical and urban planning perspectives, i.e. including economic, social and environmental impact assessment for alternative development paths.

Project description

The purpose of the project is to ensure Danish participation in IEA EBC Annex 83 – “Positive energy districts”. The overarching goal of Annex 83 is to develop the needed information and guidance for the planning and implementation of Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) including both technical and urban planning perspectives, i.e. including economic, social and environmental impact assessment for various alternative development paths.

District energy optimization will be key if Denmark wants to fulfill planned future emission reductions, and through participation in the IEA project, we will be able to influence content and focus of the project, while at the same time strengthening Danish export opportunities. Project participation will also strengthen the Danish position through the international cooperation on planning and operation of district energy solutions for districts.

The project is divided into four subtasks:

Subtask A: Definitions and context
Subtask B: Methods, Tools and Technologies for Realizing Positive Energy Districts
Subtask C: Organizing principles and impact assessment
Subtask D: Demos, implementation and dissemination

Danish participation in and contribution to IEA Annex 83 is important as the outcome of the project may form the basis for a future revision of the EU Directive on the energy performance of buildings.
