IEA EBC Annex 84 Participation
EBC Annex 84 investigates the social and technical challenges of demand management of buildings in DHC systems, and how these can be overcome for various building typologies, climate zones and local conditions as well as how digitalisation of heating demand (real-time data from smart meters) can faster the activation process and contribute to unfolding the dynamic building characteristics.
The aim of Annex 84 is to provide comprehensive knowledge and tools for successful activation of the buildings’ flexibility and storage potential in district heating and cooling systems (DHCS). The investigations will be conducted at different levels and focus on the social (involved actors and collaboration models), hardware (technology) and software (methodologies) challenges, i.e. requirements, limitations and needed development. Finally, the investigations will include real life tests and demonstration.
The Annex 84 consists of 4 subtasks (ST):
STA: Collaboration models
STB: Technology at building level
STC: Methods and tools
STD: Case studies
The outcome will be:
Overview of the actors involved in collaboration, identification of their existing and future role, their expectations and limitations towards future collaboration as well as the bottlenecks in the legal frame.
Design guidelines for new and existing heating/cooling installations and DHC substations with specification of minimum technological requirements for enabling demand management.
New methods and tools to utilize the real-time smart heat data for building performance optimization and modelling.
Overview of different case studies of demand management at either single technologies, building or DHC community level.
The Annex 84 is in preparation phase until June 2021 and will start four years working phase afterwards.
