IEA Vind Task 47 - Aerodynamic Experiments and Simulations on Wind Turbines in Turbulent Inflow

The aim with the project is to support the participation of DTU Wind Energy in the new IEA Task 47 “Innovative aerodynamic experiments and simulations on wind turbines in turbulent inflow”. By this participation, DTU will benchmark different wind turbine design and simulation models against experimental data from the DanAero data base as well as simulation models from other participants.

Project description

The present project will support the participation of DTU Wind Energy in the new IEA Wind TCP Task 47 “Innovative aerodynamic experiments and simulations on wind turbines in turbulent in-flow”. This new IEA Task covers scientific gaps that were highlighted in the preceding Task 29, where 27 institutions in 9 countries participated. DTU Wind Energy´s participation will concentrate on two major activities of the overall Task 47 defined within two technical work packages (WPs). The first comprises a continuation of a Task 29 activity dealing with the analysis of the DanAero data base and benchmarking of codes using the experimental data. In this new Task 47, the focus is now set on the unsteady and turbulent nature of the flow that triggers the dynamic response of large blades. These aspects were only briefly considered in the benchmark study of Task 29, but are important for the design of future multi-MW wind turbines. The second WP deals with the benchmarking of simulation codes for large wind turbines of at least 15MW which will soon become reality. The aim is to identify to which extent current design models can cope with these new challenges, by cross-comparisons of models with various levels of fidelity.
