Bifrost

Bifrost – safe CO2 permanent storage with scale and longevity to support Denmark becoming carbon neutral.

Project description

Bifrost aims at providing a long-term solution for CCS in Denmark by using existing infrastructure in the Danish North Sea. Our concept leverages the assets owned by the Danish Underground Consortium (DUC - consisting of TotalEnergies, Noreco and Nordsøfonden) (depleted offshore O&G fields) and Ørsted (pipelines connecting to shore) to initially mature a 3 Mtpa of CO2 storage around Harald. Simultaneously we will seek to qualify the larger opportunity to store up to 16Mtpa. To achieve this, in this project we propose activities to demonstrate for the first time, the re-use of existing wells for injection and storage of CO2 in both sandstone and chalk reservoirs, the repurposing of hydrocarbon pipelines for CO2 transportation, and alternative shipping options. These activities will be carried out by DUC, Ørsted and DTU, over the next two years, and in addition to the technological development, we will advance monitoring technologies and protocols as well as improved understanding of the socio-economic aspects associated with CCS. Bifrost will be key for Denmark to unlock its CCS potential in the North Sea, meet its carbon neutrality goals and to provide employment alternatives to the work force currently related to O&G production.
