Temperature flexible district energy solution integrated with local RES-production and utili-sation of innovative Flex-Booster heat pumps

Udviklingsafdelingen

The objective is to develop, test and demonstrate new hybrid low temperature district energy solutions with local use of renewable energy sources. The project is carried out with the aim of conversion of a natural gas supplied residential district with 300 consumers that will test a new type of district heating substation with build-in heat pump.

Project description

This project demonstrates a new hybrid DH (District Heating) system based on a new type of consumerunit with a build-in temperature flexible heat-pump serving both space heating and hot tap water for households. This unit will replace individual gas/ oil-fired boilers to convert the buildings to a carbon neutral future.

The system will become a game changer as the heat pump is very flexible and can supply elevated temperature for old houses and take up heat from a variety of sources with a high efficiency, incl. ultra-low temperature DH, ground source loops, solar collectors, and waste heat.

For DH systems the unit will replace the conventional substation and allow for local co-production in combination with a Flex-Temperature DH system.

The project analyses, develops and demonstrates the applicable concepts for combination of local and central production with this new unit, use local renewable sources and non-electric peak together in a new flexible temperature district heating network in an optimum way at reduced cost. The full-scale demonstration will take place in Hvidovre.                                                                                                                     The results will be used to exploit new hybrid solutions for the DH sector and increase the system efficiency, reduce the environmental impact, and reduce use of primary energy.
