ECES Annex 31 Energy Storage with Buildings and Districts

Institut for Byggeri, By og Miljø

For energy efficient buildings or districts to reach their full potential, the issue of integrating energy storage and optimising its operation must be properly addressed. Therefore, there is a need for development of efficient and reliable design approaches and operating strategies for storage in conjunction with local thermal and electrical energy production and to support intermittency in the external grid.

Project description
The general objective of Annex 31 is to address the integration, control and automation of energy storage within buildings, districts and/or local utilities. The work of IEA ECES Annex 31 is divided into 5 tasks – A through E. Each of the tasks is
divided into a number of subtasks. Further information on Annex 31 can be found at http://www.iea-eces.org/files/iea-eces_annex_31.pdf

The objective of this project:
The objective is to contribute to the elaboration of the work within Task B: “Methodologies and tools to optimise the total performance (energy, environmental and economical) of whole systems” and specifically Subtask B-3 focusing on recent developments of optimisation methods and tools at building level. Dynamic simulations are necessary to consider storage and interactions between multi-source systems, building envelope, occupant and the external environment. All the system
and building envelope configurations will be assessed based on the lifetime of the building. The overall result of the Annex will be a design guideline for integrated energy storage with energy efficient buildings and districts. The developed technologies can be used in applications that are beyond the capabilities of traditional building simulation programs.
