SafeBESS

Center for Transport og Elektriske Systemer

SafeBESS-project presents safe and pragmatic requirements for installation of stationary grid-connected battery systems. Based on international research and best-practice from several countries the project propose guidelines and checklists supplemented with course programs for dealers and intermediaries of battery systems, installers and end-users.

Project description

SafeBESS – safe battery systems

The project develops Danish guidelines for safe battery system (BESS) installation in a cooperation across relevant sectors.

With falling battery and solar panel prices, Energinet.dk predicted in 2016 that Denmark over 25 years might face a boom in hybrid PV-BESS systems with maybe 3.5 GWh storage capacity. The solar and auto industry including Tesla, Mercedes and many more (many from China) already offer domestic battery solutions.

Serious suppliers in the business are concerned about the lack of regulation and the potential customers’ general lack of risk awareness regarding grid-connected BESS. Risk of accidents can be reduced significantly by following a number of precautions in the design, installation, operation and maintenance. Officially recommended guidelines will provide serious suppliers of safer BESS systems fair competition over the less safe systems else likely to be installed. Unfortunate incidents with early PV-BESS hybrid systems have already occurred.

From international research and best-practice from several countries, the SafeBESS project prepares dissemination through guidelines, checklists and an international conference on battery-safety in Denmark. Training courses is offered to dealers and intermediaries of battery systems, installers and end-users, covering from buy-decision to removal and disposal.
