IEA EBC Annex 80: Resilient Cooling

The overall objective is to promote resilient low energy and low carbon cooling systems as the
mainstream and preferred solutions for cooling and overheating issues in the future energy
efficiency of buildings.

Project description

The construction of very energy efficient new buildings with high air-tightness, high levels of insulation and large glazed façades as well as the energy efficient renovation of existing buildings lead often to severe issues of building overheating and to a significant increasing cooling demand in our built environment. Urbanisation and densification, climate change, elevated comfort
expectations are issues that further increase the challenge and there is a significant need for efficient and robust cooling.

Resilient Cooling is used to denote low energy and low carbon cooling solutions that strengthen the ability of individuals, and our community as a whole to withstand, and also prevent, the thermal and other impacts of changes in global and local climates; particularly with respect to increasing ambient temperatures and the increasing frequency and severity of heat waves.

The Annex will encompass both active and passive cooling technologies and systems. The Annex will generate instructions for the improvement of existing systems and their control strategies. It will provide guidelines for resilient cooling design and operation and produce recommendations for the integration of resilient cooling in legislation and standards as well as on energy
performance calculation and verification methods.
