Net Zero Energy Carbon Capture at ARC

Kvalitet og Miljø

The purpose of this project is to construct, commission and operate a cost-effective pilot scale Carbon Capture plant at ARC, demonstrate satisfactory operation targeted at net zero energy consumption, collect data and optimize the layout and operation of the plant. The final outcome of the project will be a decision base for ARC to decide upon an investment in a full-size Carbon Capture plant to capture all of the 480,000 tons of CO2 emitted by ARC every year.

Project description

The ambition of this project is to demonstrate that carbon capture at ARC can be done at net zero energy consumption. This is ground-breaking, as the energy needed to capture carbon is approx. 25% of the lower heat value in the waste. It is the aim of the project to reduce the net energy consumption needed of the carbon capture process by focusing on energy optimizations of every step of the carbon capture process and integrate it into the district heating production at ARC, to achieve the cheapest possible CO2 capture.

The outcome of the project will be a complete pilot-scale CC plant that will be constructed at ARC, integrated with the waste-to-energy plant and optimized for net zero energy consumption. Trial runs, operations optimization, training of operators and 200 hours testing aims to demonstrate the feasibility of the system. Based upon these results, two Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) are the final deliverables from the project: A generic “cook-book” or manual for other waste-to-energy plants considering investing in CC plants, and a specific FEED to be presented to the board of directors of ARC to enable them to decide upon investing in a full-scale 480,000 tons/year CC.
