Full scale demonstration of low temperature district heating in existing buildings

The project will demonstrate the use of low-temperature (LT) district heating in two existing single-family house neighbourhoods, in Sønderby in Høje Taastrup and Tilst ved Aarhus, respectively. The difference between the two areas is that one neighbourhood has floor heating, and the other is primarily heated by radiators. A new high-insulated twin supply pipe and modified LT flow-heat exchanger units will be tested in the demonstration houses. In addition, a newly developed technology will be tested for controlling heating and radiator systems. The project will also investigate issue regarding energy renovations of houses and residents' commitment. In parallel, additional optimization and analyses of the LT heating system for low-energy buildings in Lærkehaven near Aarhus will be performed. There are already detailed measurement devices, making it possible to perform more analyses of e.g. user behaviour, including domestic water consumption, and to look at opportunities to optimize the operation of the network, including reduction of the return temperature. The analyses will mainly focus on optimizing the new type of user unit with district heating storage. Users will be involved, and user interface for displaying consumption data will be implemented. Finally, an international guideline will be prepared with input from foreign project partners

Results
The aim is to further develop and market mature concepts for the future low-temperature (LT) district heating system, thus creating a solid platform for the future Danish district heating technology and industry. Building on two previous R&D projects, the new LT district heating concept will for the first time be demonstrated in existing buildings
